What’s the difference between non-member (or “public”) access and member access to the Directory, and how can I gain access to the member privileges of the Directory?

The Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory was developed as a tool to be utilized by all organizations and individuals with an interest in the bioscience community of Ohio. The Directory contains a wealth of information about a large number of organizations, much of which BioOhio has made available to the public. This information can be accessed without logging in (“public,” or non-member access). On the other hand, some information has been made available only to BioOhio members as a membership benefit. The “members-only” information includes contact details for individuals within organizations, as well as data on grants and patents received. This information can be accessed by simply entering the Login Name and Password you received with your Membership Packet on the left side of the Directory’s main page (http://directory.bioohio.com). If you are not an BioOhio member, and are interested in becoming one, fill out an online application (web site address) or email Matt Schutte (mschutte@bioohio.com).

What are the benefits of logging in, and how do I do so?

Logging in can be accomplished by entering the Login Name and Password provided by BioOhio in the appropriate boxes on the left-hand side of the main Directory page (http://directory.bioohio.com). Click the “Log In” button, and a successful login will be characterized by a Welcome message.

Logging in provides different benefits, depending on what type of Login Name and Password you are using. If you are logging in with an “Administrative” Login Name and Password (one provided to every organization in the Directory, regardless of BioOhio membership status), you will have the ability to update your organization’s Directory profile, as well as information for all Key Contacts listed for your organization. Additionally, Administrative users have access to members-only information if that user’s organization is a paid BioOhio member.

If you are logging in with a “Member Associate” account (one provided to every paid organizational member, for distribution and use within that organization), you have access to members-only information without the ability to make changes to Directory profiles. You will see “Welcome Member Associate” upon logging in if you are using this type of account.

If you are using an Individual or Student Member Login Name and Password, you will have access to all members-only information and the capacity to update your personal contact information listed under BioOhio Individual Members or BioOhio Student Members. Regardless of type of user you are, logging in always has benefits!

What do I do if I can’t remember my Login Name or Password, wish to change either one, or receive an error message when attempting to log in?

Please send an email to Mollie Hannon (mhannon@bioohio.com).

I received a Login Name and Password from BioOhio, but they don’t seem to provide me with access to members-only information. Why is this, and what should I do?

There are three reasons why a Login Name and Password would not provide the user with access to members-only data. First and most commonly, if you are using the “Administrative” Login Name and Password for a non-member organization, then you will not have access to members-only information unless your organization becomes an BioOhio member. All organizations within the Directory are supplied with Administrative Login Names and Passwords, regardless of membership status. These are provided for the purpose of allowing all organizations to update the data for their respective organizations (keeping it as current as possible). Hence, Administrative users do have the ability to update their organization’s Directory profile, but will only have access to members-only data if membership is acquired. If you are affiliated with an organization that is not an BioOhio member, and would like information on becoming a member (either as an organization or an individual), please email Matt Schutte.

The second possible cause is if your organization’s (or individual’s/student’s) membership has expired. Since BioOhio membership lasts for one year from date of payment, all benefits are withdrawn after that time, including access to members-only information in the Directory. This is probably the explanation if you were able to access such data at some point in time. If you wish to know the status of your organizational, individual, or student membership (and how much time remains before expiration), email Matt Schutte.. Upon membership renewal, your access to restricted information will be reinstated.

Lastly, if you are unable to obtain access to members-only information, the membership payment may not have been processed yet. Login Names and Passwords are assigned and released upon processing of an organizational or individual application and payment, and may take a few days. If you feel as though your payment should have been processed by now and would like to inquire about its status, please contact Mollie Hannon.

If none of these scenarios correctly characterize your situation and you are still having trouble, do not hesitate to contact Matt Schutte or Mollie Hannon.

What do the different Search options do, and how can I utilize them to search the Directory efficiently?

On the main Directory page (http://directory.BioOhio.com), there are four main search functions: informational category, organizational market sector, profile-specific keywords, and city.

The Category section lists the major types of data represented in the Directory – information on bioscience companies, research and medical institutions, technology incubators, financing resources, government entities, bioscience-related patents, and bioscience-related grants. The search results are restricted first by check-marked categories, and include only information related to these categories; hence, check all category boxes that interest you. For users with member access, checking Ohio Bioscience Patents or Ohio Bioscience Grants essentially restricts the results to organizations with patents and/or grants (depending on which are checked) that fall within the organizational types checked. For instance, if you wish to locate research and medical institutions that have grants or patents, you would check the “Research and medical institutions” box and both Patents and Grants boxes, and click “Search.”

The second search criterion, Market Sectors, allows you to search for organizations that participate in certain market activities. You can highlight any number of market sectors to include in your search, and the search results will include all information within the informational type(s) specified that participate in any of the selected market sectors. To ensure the most search results, choose market sectors generously.

The Directory also allows for users to search by profile-specific keywords. Before entering a keyword for which to search, you will probably want to choose the profile type for which to search for the keyword – either organizational profiles, contact profiles, or patent and grant profiles. By choosing one of three profile types, the user directs the search engine to search for the keyword within organizational information (including organizational names and descriptions), contact information (including contact first and last names and titles), or patent and grant information (including patent/grant titles and abstracts). Unfortunately, at this time the keyword search criterion allows for only one word string to be searched for. A search for “FDA approval,” for example, would produce fewer results than would a search for “FDA” since the engine looks for exact matches of “FDA approval” instead of instances of either term (or both in different locations). Please note that searching within contact information and patent/grant information is restricted to BioOhio members only.

Lastly, users have the ability to filter their search further by selecting one or multiple cities. Only those organizations that fall within any of the cities selected, and match specified informational types (checkboxes), market sectors, and keywords will be returned. If no city is chosen, then all cities are included in the search by default.

If you have any further questions as to the what’s and how’s of the Directory search engine, contact Mollie Hannon.

How do I update the information for the organization at which I work or my personal contact information at my organization?

To update the information for your organization, first log in to the Directory using the Administrative Login Name and Password supplied with your membership packet. Second, type the name of your organization in the “Keyword Search” box (leaving the radio button at “Organizational Information”) and click “Search.” On the page of results, click the name of your organization to bring up your organization’s Directory profile. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Edit Organization Info” button; a second screen pops up providing you with editable fields. You can also edit the information for the contacts at your organization by clicking each individual name, located on the right side of the screen above Market Sectors. Make all appropriate changes and click the “Submit Changes For Review” button at the bottom of the page; your changes will be posted within two business days. For more information on updating your organization’s profile, please contact Mollie Hannon.

To update personal contact information for yourself as either an Individual or Student member, first log in to the Directory by entering your Member Login Name and Password supplied with your membership packet. Once logged in, type “BioOhio” in the “Keyword Search” box and click “Search.” On the search results page, find BioOhio and click on either the “BioOhio Individual Members” or “BioOhio Student Members” located beneath the BioOhio description. On the next page, locate and click your name on the right hand side under “Key Contacts” which brings up your personal contact information. Click the “Edit Contact Info” button, and make all necessary changes on the popup page that appears. When finished, click the “Update Information” button, and your changes will appear within two business days. For more information on updating your personal contact information, please contact Mollie Hannon.

If you are listed as a Key Contact for an organization (and are not an Individual or Student member), and wish to update your personal contact information, please notify the individual at your organization that has been supplied with the organization’s Administrative Login Name and Password. If you do not know who this is, please contact Mollie Hannon and we can supply you with the email address of the Administrator who can make these changes for you.

How can I get my name listed as a Key Contact for my organization and my personal contact information stored?

Please send your request with all appropriate information to Matt Schutte. This email should include your organization and your name, title, email address, phone number, etc.

How does BioOhio gather all of the information that is stored within the Directory? How is it maintained and kept current?

Much of the information in the Directory has been acquired through many years of offline data accumulation. Although BioOhio is somewhat active in obtaining information for new organizations, we depend mostly on the bioscience community itself to contribute the bulk of new information. We strongly encourage emailing us about new organizations that you know about that are not included in the Directory, and invite comments related to correcting errors. We do our best to ensure that information from you is added or corrected in a very timely manner.

Similarly, we depend on the bioscience community to maintain the integrity of the data and keep it current. We have developed a Directory that allows all organizations to update all pertinent information at their convenience from their computers. This was accomplished by providing each organization in the Directory (both BioOhio members and non-members) with Administrative Login Names and Passwords. We encourage all organizations to take an active role in keeping this data current! If you need any more information on how you can do this, please contact Matt Schutte or Mollie Hannon.

How does BioOhio acquire the Patents and Grants information?

We encourage every organization to submit via email to Mollie Hannon (in any file format) a list of received bioscience-related patents, providing any or all of the following information for each: patent number, patent title, contact information, date of issuance, an abstract, and patent class number(s). Similarly, grant information can be submitted to Mollie Hannon via email (in any file format). For each bioscience-related grant received, please provide any or all of the following information: grant number, grant title, contact information, dollar amount, opening and/or closing date(s) of grant, an abstract, and the organization providing the grant to your organization. Changes or corrections to patent or grant information also can be submitted Mollie Hannon.
